Pepper Grinder

David Michaux | 2013

[I wrote this with Christopher Walken’s voice in mind; complete with distinguished pauses and unique pronunciations. You may choose to listen from other great voices such as Steve Buscemi, Hugo Weaving, or Robert di Niro.]

I can’t find the pepper grinder.
I need the pepper grinder.
The flavor – for this dish – I need that grinder.

I was happy – I was fine with my preparations
until I reached for the pepper grinder.
It wasn’t there. It should have been there.
It’s home – it’s proper place – it wasn’t there.
You might say it was dislocated. Misplaced.
I was … perturbed.
My meal – my dish – that flavor I desired.
I was perturbed.

The meal can’t go on.
I searched.
For eight full minutes.
I walked through the first floor of my house.
There’s a cold egg in my hand.
For eight minutes.
Where’s the pepper grinder?
An egg boiled to perfection – now it’s cold –
Regular pepper tempts me. No.
Tasting only salt would be an offense to my tongue.
Pepper. Freshly ground pepper.
It’s spicy – albeit with a paradoxical sweetness.

I’m no longer perturbed.
I’m outraged – I find myself looking for weapons.
God knows what I would do to whoever – whomever – moved the pepper grinder.
Their car will be unrecognizable. I’d use a jack hammer.
I have one.
Their house will be in ashes.
Their family will need to –

I find the pepper grinder.
My mind – it’s calm now – I’m fine.
Souls have been saved. Entire families spared.

I turn the grinder – with care – over the egg.
Two grinds.
And a gentle shake to loosen any pepper debris.
The curvature of my egg – perfectly seasoned.

… hm

I enjoyed that dish.
